(Persia Digest) – The Iranian Foreign Minister has said that Iran wants to be present in a strong region, and added: “We do not want to be the regional hegemon. The time for hegemony has passed. We must remain practical and accept our differences in order to strengthen our region.”

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Javad Zarif stated: “The US and its local customers are tormented by their choices and wrong decisions.”

He continued: “World powers and their regional allies have been making the wrong decisions in our region for a long time now, blaming others, especially Iran, for the consequences of these short-sighted decisions and strategic mistakes.”

He went on to say: “We believe that the Persian Gulf region needs a new security architecture. We have proposed a strong region where small and large nations, even those who have been rivals historically, can participate in establishing stability.”

Zarif reiterated: “As soon as the 2015 JCPOA nuclear agreement was signed, Iran made efforts to use a similar approach for the Persian Gulf and proposed a Regional Dialogue Forum. This was not welcomed, but the proposal is still on the table.”

He emphasized: “In a situation where we are dangerously exposed to escalation of conflicts that will affect our children and our posterity, I ask my counterparts in the Persian Gulf to join Iran in realizing these peaceful solutions.”
