(Persia Digest) – Forough Abbasi is the first Iranian woman skier who will be representing Iran at the 2018 Winter Olympics for the second time.
Forough has taken part in the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games torch relay. She made it to the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, for the first time to earn the 49 rank out of 88 participants. She is a daughter of the desert, but says she loves snow although she grew up without it. Her wish is to be the flag carrier for the Iran delegation in the upcoming Winter Olympics.
In an interview with “Shargh” newspaper, Forough talked about being the torch carrier for the 2018 Winter Olympics: “As a sponsor of the games, Samsung sent out a call announcing for all those interested in taking part in the torch relay to send in a letter counting an event in their lives that had been a turning point for them. The best written letters were selected. I wrote to them saying I am a girl born in a desert city. I had never seen snow, but fell in love with it. After spending time in rock climbing and cycling, I realized that I must follow my heart and take up skiing. I am grateful that my letter was chosen as the ninth best one out of the 16 thousand sent to Samsung and that’s how I was able to make it to the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games torch relay.”
When asked what she planned for after the Olympics, she said: “After the Winter Olympics, Iran will be hosting the Asian Games and that is where I’ll be. I hope to be a medal winner at the Games. I have three gold, one sliver, and one bronze medal in the youth category of the games, but not in the adult category yet.”
