(Persia Digest) – At the first meeting of the steering board for “Hamedan – Tourism Capital of Asia”,

the Head of Marketing for Iran’s Tourism said: “The Tourism Capital of Asia is a pilot program which is being implemented for the first time in Hamedan in 2018. Hamedan has been chosen because it is the oldest city in Iran.”

Leila Ajdari added: “In 2018, we are planning a number of international events for our main cities in Iran. This is a good opportunity for us to attract tourists to our country, especially to the cities of Yazd, Hamedan, and Tabriz.”

She went on to add that the first of these events will be held in Hamedan in January 2018 and called this a golden opportunity to promote the tourism industry of Iran.

Hamedan is in the western mountainous area of Iran and its oldest city. It is also an ancient city on an international level. In a statement issued in 2006, Iran’s Parliament declared it as “The capital of Iranian history and civilization”. Hamedan was the capital city of Persia’s first royal dynasty, the Medes. The great physician Avicenna’s mausoleum is the symbol of Hamedan and shows Iran’s standing in the world of culture and knowledge. Hamedan Province has over 1752 historic sites.
