(Persia Digest) – For the first time after the Iranian Revolution of 1979, a high ranking navy official has been invited to Europe. Habibollah Sayari, Commander of the Iranian Navy, has traveled to Venice at the invitation of his Italian counterpart to take part in the Venice Regional Seapower Symposium for the Navies of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Countries.

After being officially welcomed at Venice airport, Sayari told reporters: “I will be speaking about the maritime power and experiences of the Islamic Republic of Iran's navy in establishing security in the Gulf of Aden and tackling piracy. The importance of Iran's experiences has attracted attention from other countries and we will also talk about the ability of the Islamic Republic to establish security in bilateral meetings.”

The 11th Venice Regional Seapower Symposium for the Navies of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Countries is taking place here from 17-20 October 2017. Naval commanders from 50 countries will be discussing issues on tackling illegal activities, technical innovations, and strengthening cooperation in maritime security.

The commander of Iran’s Navy is scheduled to speak on the first day of this four-day conference.

The symposium takes place once every two years and it will be discussing navies beyond their traditional roles to enforce maritime safety. In addition to naval commanders, there will be a number of international, industrial, and cultural organizations, and university and maritime news agency at the Syposium.
