(Persia Digest) – The documentary “Sardari’s Enigma” made by Mahdieh Zardini has been screened for the first time at the London Jewish Cultural Centre. This is a documentary trying to collect enough evidence and documents to have him recognized as Righteous Among the Nations and have his name placed at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC.
Abdol-Hossein Sardari’s name was mentioned for the first time seven years ago in the book penned by Fariborz Mokhtari entitled In the Lion’s Shadow.
Mokhtari has researched Sardari placing himself in danger to save Iranian Jews and those from elsewhere from the Nazi death camps. His historic role has also been discussed in the book by Abbas Milani The Persian Sphinx: Amir Abbas Hoveyda and the Riddle of the Iranian Revolution.
Madieh Zardini has tried to collect such proof in-between her interviews and research conducted among the archives of countries such as the US, France, and Germany for the museum in Washington.
Abdol-Hossein Sardari was an Iranian diplomat chargé d’affaires during WWII missioned at the Iranian Embassy in Paris under the Nazi occupation where he issued passports for Iranian and non-Iranian Jews, helping them to escape Nazi-occupied regions.
After the war, he was called back to Iran, stripped of his diplomatic status, and expelled from the Foreign Ministry for issuing illegal passports.
Zardini has interviewed survivors, witnesses, and their families who were helped by Sardari to flee France.
The documentary took three years to make and was funded by the Iranian Jewish Centre in London and the Iran Heritage Foundation. It will be screened at the Washington Film Festival and some European cities.
