(Persia Digest) – The Head of Iran’s Tourism Organization, Ali-Asghar Munesan, has said that his country aims to attract 20 million tourists by 2025 by mobilizing all its facilities with an eye on the importance the government and parliament attach to tourism in order to give Iran its rightful place in the industry.
He continued by saying that five million tourists currently travel to Iran every year, representing 2.9% of the country’s GDP.
He added that increasing the share of tourism in the GDP is on the government’s agenda and that this number must reach 20 million by 2025 based on plans approved by the Islamic Consultative Assembly or Majlis (Parliament).
As previously reported by Persia Digest, Iran ranks 10th among countries with the most tourist attractions. But, its share of the industry in the world is only half a percent. According to the latest statistics by Master Card, Iran ranked 68 out of 132 countries in attracting tourists.
