Iran wins Pahlevani and Zoorkhaneh Championships

(Persia Digest) – The 6th Asian Pahlevani and Zoorkhaneh Ritual Championships has taken place in Tanauan, Philippines. Iran claimed the championship title for the sixth time.

The Iranian delegation took gold for the Zoorkhaneh team event. In the individual events, Iran took five gold and one silver medals. On the last day of the games, Iranian wrestlers took two gold, two silver, and one bronze medals to win the championships. Iraq was the runner-up, and teams from Nepal and the Philippines ranked a mutual third.

Zoorkhaneh gymnasium sports, with or without equipment, is an ancient cultural sport practiced in Iran; another name for it is Ancient Iranian Sports. Wrestling is also a part of it. On 16 November 2010, this sport was registered as a Unesco intangible heritage by Iran.
