(Persia Digest)- The Deputy of Iran’s handicrafts and traditional arts announced plans proposed to the World Crafts Council for introducing the mother of all crafts from different parts of the world.
In an interview with ISNA, Bahman Namvar Motlagh said that we launched a call to find the oldest artisan in Iran. A lady aged 110 from Sirjan in Kerman Province who weaves Shirikipich kilims was introduced to us. Mrs Mahnesa Shahsavari was invited and honored at the 28th Handicrafts Fair as the Mother of Handicrafts in Iran.
Namvar Motlagh said China and India have announced that they will conduct a research on the subject of Iran’s proposal to find their oldest artisan. The World Crafts Council has welcomed the plan and members from Asia and Oceania will also do the same in their respective countries.
When asked what would be next if a person older than the Iranian lady is found, he explained that if other countries have artisans over the age of 110 they will also introduce them. When we showed an extract of the documentary made on Mahnesa Shahsavari at our meeting, all the other members were in awe of an artisan who has been working in handicrafts for nearly one century.
