Iran has numerous churches across the country, many of which have been registered by the Unesco World Heritage Site for their ancient, specific structures. Restorations have begun on seventeen old churches nationwide; according to the director of World Heritage Center of churches in Iran, 70% of the restoration works has been completed.

Center Director, Shirley Avdian, has told Mehr News Agency: “Over 70% of the works have now been completed on the 17 churches. None of these are registered by Unesco. These include the churches in the cities of Mashhad, Salmas, Shiraz, etc… We have also plans to restore the church in Abadan in cooperation with the Arvan Free Zone Organization.”

On the restoration of Saint Stepanos Monastery, she said: “We are currently getting the murals inside the Monastery ready for public viewing. The restorations here begun last year and will continue until March and the Nowruz New Year. Restoring the altar will carry on into June. Otherwise, the internal works have been completed and the Monastery will be open to the public soon. We also intend to hold a handicrafts fair here and do the landscaping.”
