(Persia Digest) – US media have accused Iran of supporting al-Qaeda by citing statements made by Mohammad Javad Larijani.

In an interview with Iranian television on 30 May 2018, the Secretary of the High Council for Human Rights (Judiciary of the IR of Iran) spoke about al-Qaeda terrorists passing through Iran, of which Al Arabia news network published a fragmented, wrong translation.

Persia Digest reports that, following the 9/11 attacks, the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, also known as the 9/11 Commission, was set up on 27 November 2002 at the request of George W Bush and Congress to investigate the attacks. In a report published on 22 July 2004, the Commission claimed that the perpetrators of 9/11 passed through Iran without having their passports stamped.

Following the release of the Larijani interview video by Al Arabia, the Daily Caller website in the US claimed that Larijani’s revelations can confirm the findings by the Commission on 9/11 and Iran’s role in the attacks.

The claim, based on the misinterpreted translation made by Al Arabia of Larijani’s remarks, is being made while a 28-page confidential report by the joint 9/11 congressional committee showed that Sasudi Arabia was the most important supporter of the 9/11 attack perpetrators.

Nevertheless, the New York Post also made a similar report on Larijan’s remarks, writing: “A top Iranian official has admitted for the first time that Iran knowingly helped al-Qaeda terrorists — including some of the 9/11 attackers — travel secretly through the Middle East.”

Although, in a report dated 9 September 2017, the New York Post had previously revealed the role of the Saudi Arabian Embassy in the US in the 9/11 attacks, writing: “The Saudi Embassy funded simulations for the abduction of airplanes.”

But, in addition to the media, the US Secretary of State also tweeted in Arabic: “Watch this. Mohammad-Javad Larijani, Iran’s Deputy Chief Justice, has revealed in unprecedented remarks that Iran facilitated the passage of al-Qaeda members who carried out the 9/11 attacks. He has confirmed the findings of the special commission on 9/11.”

But, what did Mohammad-Javad Larijani really say?

You can watch his interview with the correct translation below.
