(Persia Digest) - Sadegh Zibakalam who has been given the Deutsche Welle Freedom of Speech Award 2018, has dedicated it to Abbas Amir-Entezam.
Zibakalam, who had been interviewed by the Deutsche Welle some time ago, was given the 2018 Freedom of Speech Award for his efforts in Iran.
Zibakalam was recently sentenced to 18 months in prison and two years of social deprivation by the Revolutionary Court, though he has appealed against the conviction. This year he has been selected to receive this award, and he has dedicated it to Abbas Amir-Entezam.
“There are men and women in Iran who deserve to receive this award much more than I. For example, Narges Mohammadi, Nasrin Sotoudeh, Abdolfattah Soltani, Mohammad Maleki and many of our compatriots deserve these awards, but if I get to choose a person among these people, I think that is Abbas Amir-Entezam,” he said in an interview with Ghanoun Newspaper.
“Last year, it was awarded to the editor of Hürriyet Daily News, because after the Turkish coup d'état, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had a grudge against him, but he did not pay attention to these pressures and the newspaper continued its activities. This year, I was honored to be awarded,” he added.
He is due to go to Germany late June this year to receive his award. Zibakalam said that if he is not allowed to leave the country, he will send his daughter Leila to receive the award, and if his daughter is not allowed to leave either, he will ask Yousefi Eshkevari, who is, in his words, also a victim of freedom of speech, to receive his award.
