Mousavian and Prince Turki Al Faisal hot debate

Mousavian and Prince Turki Al Faisal hot debate

With tensions between regional rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia at the brink, a rare dialogue recently took place between two former senior Saudi and Iranian officials. Hosted by the Center for Strategic Studies at the Joint Special Operations University in Tampa, Florida, former Saudi Ambassador to the United States and Director General of Saudi Arabia’s intelligence agency Prince Turki al Faisal debated Hossein Mousavian, a former spokesman for Iran’s nuclear negotiators and chairman of the foreign policy committee of Iran’s National Security Council. The lively discussion touched on each country’s view of its security environment and the broader issues affecting the Iran-Saudi relationship. LobeLog has obtained the full transcript of the conversation, and the following is an abbreviated excerpt covering the key points.

5 potential scenarios for Iran deal

Seyed Hossein Mousavian wrote in Al-Monitor on 13 April 2018: “President Donald Trump’s tapping of Mike Pompeo and John Bolton for secretary of state and national security adviser, respectively, should do away with any pretense that the US administration wishes to “fix” the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). While Trump has long telegraphed his desire to undo the nuclear deal, Pompeo and especially Bolton have long advocated regime-change policies toward Iran, including war. As the May 12 deadline for Trump to renew sanctions waivers under the JCPOA approaches, five scenarios exist for how Trump’s “fix it or nix it” saga on the accord will play out.

Mousavian: EU must not act as grader for military aggression against Iran

Speaking at the Brussels conference, Seyed Hossein Mousavian has stated: “Trump’s request to change the JCPOA international inspection regime is out of order, because the agreement already includes unprecedented, transparent, and regular inspections. Moreover, there are no sunset clauses in this respect in the JCPOA.”

Hadian: Iran uranium stockpile may increase if US exists JCPOA

If the US exists the 2015 JCPOA nuclear agreement with Iran and the world powers, Iran will have four options: 1) Continue to remain committed to its obligations in the JCPOA if the other signatories (EU, Russia, and China) remain committed to theirs; 2) If the US tears up the deal, Iran will set it on fire; 3) If the US exits the deal, Iran will adjust its obligations accordingly; for instance, if our uranium stockpile is 300kgs, this will increase to 400kgs in the event of a US exit; and 4) If the US exists the JCPOA, Iran can counteract this by increasing its obligations to show its goodwill to the world.”
