Nowruz in Kurdistan – Kaveh defeats Zahhak

You may have already heard that the name Nowruz in Kurdistan was attributed to the day when the Iranian hero Kaveh Ahangar was victorious over Zahhak. This day was named “Nowruz”, meaning New Day, and celebrated as the New Year. Large bonfires were lit on hilltops and people celebrated hand in hand by singing and dancing.

Iranians travel to Iraqi Kurdistan without entry tax

Travelers to Iraqi Kurdistan will not be charged for entry as from the first day of Nowruz. By announcing the statement made by this Kurdish official, the Iranian Consulate in Erbil said: “Iranian travelers can also enter Iraqi Kurdistan for two weeks during the Nowruz holidays free of charge.”

Chaharshanbeh Suri - The festival of fire

Iran has had a long tradition of holding festivals, and Chaharshanbeh Suri is one of the ancient Iranian festivals of fire and a prelude to Nowruz. Many Iranian festivals have been forgotten during the course of history, but Chaharshanbeh Suri, on the eve of the last Wednesday of the year, is a night which, according to ancient Iranian rituals, people light a great fire that sometimes burns until dawn. They jump over bonfires and sing “[let] your ruddiness [be] mine, my paleness yours” to give their illnesses, problems and sorrows to the fire, and the fire gives them its warmth and ruddiness instead.

“Koocheh Music Festival ” in Bushehr

The first special program of the “Koocheh Music Festival” began in Bushehr yesterday, provincial capital of Bushehr Province, southern Iran. The show will go on until 16 March with the performance of folk music from around Iran. Last week also saw the celebration of Bushehri music festival on the occasion of Bushehr Day, accompanied by folk songs.

Ten Huraman villages registered as national heritage

The architectural designs of ten villages in north Huraman, an area spreading over Iran’s Kurdistan and Kermanshah provinces, have been registered as the national heritage of Iran. The villages of Galin, Halvan, Hashehmiz, Dulab, Takhteh, Vasi-Salafi, Vasi-Olia, Shian, Jān, and Bozlaneh were registered at the last meeting of the Registration Council of Iran, presided by the Cultural Heritage Deputy.

“Pir Shaliar” celebrations in Huraman

“Pir Shaliar” celebrations begin today in Huraman, Kurdistan Province. This is an ancient celebration which goes back a thousand years. It is said to have begun as a “Sadeh” mid-winter celebration in Iran; but, it was combined with mystic and religious rituals with the passage of time in the Kurdistan area and came to be known as “Pir Shaliar”.

PM of Iraqi Kurdistan meets with Rouhani

The Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister, Nechirvan Barzani, has landed in Iran for a 2-day visit and has met with President Rouhani. At the meeting, Iran’s President said: “The IR of Iran always supports a unified Iraq”. He reiterated: “Defending the sovereignty and consolidated borders of the region is the duty of all the countries and ethnic groups living here. Undoubtedly, powers outside the region have not and never will be sympathetic to the people of this region.”
