Chaharshanbeh Suri - The festival of fire
Iran has had a long tradition of holding festivals, and Chaharshanbeh Suri is one of the ancient Iranian festivals of fire and a prelude to Nowruz. Many Iranian festivals have been forgotten during the course of history, but Chaharshanbeh Suri, on the eve of the last Wednesday of the year, is a night which, according to ancient Iranian rituals, people light a great fire that sometimes burns until dawn. They jump over bonfires and sing “[let] your ruddiness [be] mine, my paleness yours” to give their illnesses, problems and sorrows to the fire, and the fire gives them its warmth and ruddiness instead.
Passing of Professor Ali-Asghar Khodadoust
Prominent ophthalmologist, corneal transplant surgeon, and lasting scientific figure of Iran and Fars Province, Professor Ali-Asghar Khodadoust, passed away this morning.
Iranian Embassy stormed in London
Four men, supporters of Ayatollah Sadegh Shirazi, climbed on the balcony of the Iranian Embassy in London on Friday afternoon, 9 March 2018, took down the Iranian flag, and rose their own flag in an apparent protest to the arrest of Ayatollah Shirazi’s son resident in the holy city of Qom in the north of Iran. Grand Ayatollah Sadegh Shirazi is a critic of the Iranian government. Following the arrest of his son, protests were also staged in Karbala, central Iraq.
Chinese finance for Shiraz-Bushehr railways
At the signing ceremony for a cooperation agreement between Iran and China to build the provincial capitals of Shiraz (Fars Province) to Bushehr (Bushehr Province) railway line, the Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development announced: “In addition to connecting Shiraz to Bushehr, our other rail projects include a line from Shiraz to Gol-Gohar (Kerman Province), from Kerman to Bandar Abbas (Hormozgan Province), and from Kerman to Chahbahar (Sistan & Baluchistan Province). On completion, a heavy road traffic load can be transferred on to the railway lines.”
Hotels to offer New Year discounts
The "New Year tourism" project is being implemented for the Nowruz holidays [Iranian New Year], offering discounts from 30 to 50 percent in some hotels in Iran.
36th Fajr International Film Festival Opens
The 36th Fajr International Film Festival will open tonight, 1 February 2018, in Tehran’s Milad Tower.
Sadeh - an ancient festival of light
Today, January 30th, is the Sadeh festival in the Iranian calendar. It is one of the greatest and most ancient Persian festivals in honor of Ahura Mazda and safeguarding of fire, the first offspring of the earth and one of four pure elements.
“Hearing” goes to Italy
“Hearing”, written and produced by Amir-Reza Kuhestani, will be staged in Milan on 17-18 February 2018. “Hearing” went on stage again in the summer of this year in Iran, at “Theatr-e Mostaghel”. It has also been staged in Switzerland, Holland, France, Germany, Greece, Belgium, Italy, Norway, Austria, Portugal, Serbia, and Macedonia.
Tenfold growth in foreign investment for Fars
Foreign investors have been taking an interest in Fars Province and businesses from Italy will soon open plants here for the production of pasta, ready to cook meals, coffee, etc… The Chinese will also open a chromite concentrate plant here.
Tajikistan Tourism-Culture week in Shiraz
The Head of the Tourism Commission of Shiraz’s Islamic City Council has announced: “The first Tajik tourism and cultural week will take place in Shiraz in the Iranian New Year Nowruz 1397 (2018) in the spring.

“Sa’di and Petrarch” forum in Iran and Italy
A forum entitled “Sa’di and Petrarch” will be held in Tehran, Shiraz, Rome, and Bologna next year.
Sa’di Day is celebrated on 21 April 2018 in Shiraz. A second day of acknowledgment for this renowned 13th century poet will also take place mid-September at the Sapienza University of Rome and Bologna University.
