Acclaimed Iranian musician to be honored in Tehran

(Persia Digest) – A ceremony will be held in Tehran’s Niavaran Cultural Center on 4 January to commemorate the late renowned Iranian musician Mohammad-Reza Lotfi on the eve of his birthday.

A number of great Iranian musicians are to take part in and address the event as in previous years. Some pieces of Iranian classical music will also be played during the ceremony which is open to the public and free for all.

Lotfi was an Iranian composer, musician and a great player of tar and setar. He was also a researcher and teacher of the Iranian traditional music and one of the influential figures of the county’s music. In addition to the tar and setar, lotfi also played the daf, kamancheh, nei and santur.

He worked with a number of well-known Iranian vocalists including Taj Esfahani, Gholam-Hossein Banan and Mohammad-Reza Shajarian.

A number of Iranian singers such as Shahram Nazeri, Hengameh Akhavan, Seddigh Ta’rif, Mohammad Golriz and Mohammad Mo’tamedi were first introduced to Iran’s music community by Lotfi.

Lotfi passed away in Tehran on 2 May 2014.
