(Persia Digest) – Some of the fans at the Iran-Morocco match in the 2018 World Cup carried placards asking for the right of Iranian women to watch football games in stadiums. This move was initially declared to be political by the St Petersburgh stadium officials. But, FIFA announced that the placards carried a social message, not a political one, and allowed fans to take them inside the stadium.
Persia Digest reports that the presence of Iranian women in stadiums is banned due to religious beliefs. This has been a concern of women in Iran for a number of years now. During this time, some girls have disguised themselves as men to watch the games in stadiums. This has been widely reported inside Iran and elsewhere.
