(Persia Digest) – One year has passed from the sudden death of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, Chairman of the Expediency Council.  A ceremony was held in Tehran on the first anniversary of his passing today, 9 January. First Deputy to Iran’s President, Eshaq Janahguiri, talked of the special character and life of the late Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Present at the memorial service were the Hashemi family, a number of cabinet ministers, leader of reformist Hope fraction Mohammad-Reza Aref, Head of the Office of the President Mahmoud Vaezi, Vice President for Women and Family Affairs Masumeh Ebtekar, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization Ali-Akbar Salehi, and a number of civil and military officials.

Also, Ayatollah Javadi Amoli, a Shiite Imamate of Iran, addressed the memorial for the late Hashemi Rafsanjani to honor his personality.

First Vice-President Speech at Hashemi Memorial

As reported by ILNA News Agency, the late Ayatollah Hashemi’s brother, Mohammad Hashemi, said at the start of the ceremony: “The President was scheduled to speak at the memorial service here today. We were informed by his office three days ago that he will not be able to attend.” He added: “We also wrote a letter to the Supreme Leader’s office, but have received no answer to date.”

Akbar Hasehmi Bahremani, known as Ali-Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, was an Iranian cleric, commentator of the Quran, and one of IR of Iran’s most influential politicians. He served two terms in office as President and two terms as Parliament speaker. Since 1989 up to his death, he was the Chairman of the Expediency Council. He was also present in all the periods of the Assembly of Experts, where he was the second Head of Assembly from 2007-2016. Hashemi passed away on 9 January 2017 at the age of 82.
