(Persia Digest) – Four men, supporters of Ayatollah Sadegh Shirazi, climbed on the balcony of the Iranian Embassy in London on Friday afternoon, 9 March 2018, took down the Iranian flag, and rose their own flag in an apparent protest to the arrest of Ayatollah Shirazi’s son resident in the holy city of Qom in the north of Iran. Grand Ayatollah Sadegh Shirazi is a critic of the Iranian government. Following the arrest of his son, protests were also staged in Karbala, central Iraq.

According to London’s Metropolitan Police, the incident was reported to them at 16h20 local time.

Iranian Ambassador to London, Hamid Baeidinejad, tweeted moments after the incident took place: “A few minutes ago, a few supporters of Ayatollah Shirazi climbed the Iranian Embassy balcony in London, took down the flag of Iran and replaced it with their own. They were shouting slogans against Iranian government officials, and damning Aisha, Abu Bakr, Omar, and Uthman. They were armed with machetes and clubs as they entered the Embassy premises. The police are present at the Embassy.”

The spokesperson of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghassemi, announced around three hours later that the four men on the balcony had been arrested for unlawful presence on diplomatic premises and asked for the trial and punishment of the perpetrators.

Baeidinejad tweeted at 22h00 London time: “The pole has been repaired and the flag of the IR of Iran is flying proudly once again.”
