(Persia Digest) – The International Paralympic Committee has nominated proud Iranian athlete, Zahra Nemati, for the International Women’ Day award.

The International Paralympic Committee has nominated five women for the award on the occasion of International Women’ Day which takes place on 8 March every year. The award ceremony is held on the penultimate day of the 2018 Winter Paralympics.

Zahra Nemati from Iran is one of the five proud ladies. She is on the Iranian national archery team with two golds, one silver, and a bronze medal in her portfolio from the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games, and one gold and one silver from the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games. She has also been awarded medals at other international competitions. She was the flag-bearer for Iran at the 2016 Rio Olympics and selected as the 2017 all-star handicapped archer.

Following her nomination for the International Women’s Day award, Zahra Nemati said: “This came as a great surprise. It was very interesting for me, because I was selected from a country where there is a lot of negative publicity against its women, saying that women’s rights are not observed in Iran.”

She added: “Despite all the negative publicity, I was nominated for the International Women’s Day award; this proud moment belongs to all Iranian women.”

The other four nominees are Esther Verger, tennis player from Holland, Dr Hayat Khattab, Egyptian Paralympics Committee President, Mina Mojtahedi of Iranian origin, Finland Paralympics Committee President, and 40-year old cyclist Sarah Storey from Britain who has 16 Paralympic medals.
