One dead, 295 injured in Iranian El Clasico

(Persia Digest) – A football match on April 26 between Persepolis Tehran and Sepahan of Isfahan which is referred to as the Iranian El Clasico ended in a draw with various sidelines/margins both inside and outside the field.

While three weeks are still remaining to the end of the premier league matches, sensitivity among the premier league’s top teams has reached its climax.

Tehran’s Persepolis and Isfahan’s Sepahan teams played at Azadi Stadium on Friday in the presence of over 80,000 spectators/fans to win the championship. Persepolis has already been the first team of the table playing over 55 matches while Sepahan was in the third place with 50 scores and fewer goal difference compared to that of the Esteghlal team.

Prior to the beginning of the match, clashes were underway between fans of the two teams and led to financial damage to the stadium. Some 295 fans were injured during the clashes and 45 of whom were transported to medical centers.

The head of Tehran’s Emergency Center has said one of the fans died shortly before the end of the first half of the match from overdose and cardiac arrest.

Meanwhile, even inside the play field, players of the two teams have repeatedly clashed and the conflicts have also continued to the end of the match.

Persepolis remained at the top of the table with 56 scores with Friday’s 0-0 result while Sepahan ranked second gaining 51 scores. It should wait to play against Esteghlal of Tehran today (April 27).

Another match has been played in Isfahan on Friday between Teraktorsazi of Tabriz and Zob-Ahan of Isfahan. It ended 2-0 in Zob-Ahan’s favor depriving Teraktorsazi of playing for championship.
