Putin and Rouhani hold talks on four topics

(Persia Digest) – Iran’s President has held talks with the Russian President on his trip to China. The parties discussed safeguarding the JCPOA, Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), bilateral trade, and the Syrian crisis.

Rouhani pointed out Russia’s important role in the JCPOA, stating: “IAEA reports show that Iran has complied with its obligations under the JCPOA. After the unlawful, unilateral exit from the deal by the US, Russia has played an important role in keeping the deal and commitments of all parties.”

Putin also said that the unilateral exit by the US was illegal, and stressed: “Moscow will continue to support the JCPOA and Iran’s interests under the deal.”

He went on to add: “Moscow supports Iran’s permanent membership in the SCO.”

On the expansion of bilateral relations and cooperation in the region, Rouhani said: “Both countries have many opportunities to work on energy swap and transit and Iran welcomes investments by Russian companies and its private sector.”

The Russian President also added: “A very good landscape exists for cooperation between the two countries in all fields, including economy.”

Vladimir Putin emphasized Moscow’s interest in working on the north-south transit corridor, and added: “Moscow also supports the permanency of Iran’s agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Putin stressed on cooperation between Russia and Iran to bring peace and stability to the region, and said: “This regional cooperation will continue at all levels and also in solving the Syrian Crisis.”

He continued: “We must continue talks on this issue, because we are achieving distinct results.”

Rouhani also emphasized that continued ties between Iran and Russia on various levels for regional security and expansion of trade are of the utmost importance.
