(Persia Digest) – In a phone call with the British Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday evening, Iran’s President, Hassan Rouhani, stressed the need to guarantee Iran's interests, saying that the EU has limited time to decide on this agreement.
Rouhani said that Iran is pursuing its national interests by committing to the deal, although, unfortunately, the other sides have not performed satisfactorily in fulfilling their obligations.
He also considered the United States withdrawal from the JCPOA illegal, irresponsible and in contrast to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231.
He stated that EU time to guarantee Iran's interests and maintain the nuclear deal is limited. “Iran’s rights under the deal related to the selling of oil, banking, investment and insurance must be guaranteed in a transparent and clear way,” Rouhani told May.
Rouhani counted the deal’s role in strengthening peace and security in the region very significant. He also stated that responsibility for any situation that would stem from the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear deal is the responsibility of that country.
"The two parties have commitments in the JCPOA. It is unacceptable that only one party fulfills its obligations," Rouhani stated.
He also referred to the decisive role of the three European countries in maintaining the deal and considered Europe's resistance to US secondary sanctions a bold move which would maintain its global credibility.
The British Prime Minister welcomed Iran’s commitment to maintain the deal. “EU’s goal is to maintain the deal, and we will work with our European allies to do all we can to safeguard it so that Iran can gain benefit from terms of this agreement.
Theresa May stated that the European Union, according to its statement, considers Iran a committed and reliable partner. She said that in this regard, it is very important for all parties to work hard to maintain the deal.
