Persia Digest (PD) reports that a poetry reading session is organized in the presence of the Supreme Leader of Iran during Ramadan every year. Twenty-nine young and pioneering poets read their works for the Leader at this year’s session.
Ayatollah Khamenei voiced his concerns about the erosion of the Persian language at this year’s gathering.

In part of his speech he said: “I have a grievance with the IRIB, because instead of promoting a correct standard language, one that is refined and well-understood, sometimes they use misinterpretations or foreign expressions. To broadcast a foreign word used by an author or translator on television embeds it in the spoken language and corrupts it unnecessarily.”
Condemning the frequent use of foreign words in the media, he addressed officials by saying: “Don’t allow the Persian language to erode and collapse.”

Ayatollah Khamenei also criticized the low quality of lyrics and slang used in songs diffused by the IRIB in TV series, and said: “Persian has been safeguarded mainly by great poets over centuries to reach us as an eloquent language. Therefore, it is up to us to safeguard its boundaries and not allow it to be blemished by a careless songwriter and broadcast by state and non-state organizations with the taxpayers’ money.”
