(Persia digest)- On Monday 18 September, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour conducted an exclusive interview with President Rouhani who is attending the UN General Assembly in New York.
When asked about the possibility of the US pulling out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal, Mr Rouhani said this can only be done at a high cost for the US, yielding no results for Trump’s administration. It will only decrease international trust for the US and its international agreements. As in the case of North Korea, he said: "But keep in mind please that if the United States wishes to withdraw from the JCPOA, why would the North Koreans waste their time in order to sit around the table of dialogue with the United States, because they would think perhaps after years of talks and a potential agreement the next US administration could step over or pull out of the agreement."
Trump has called the JCPOA “the worst deal ever”, although he has so far certified Iran’s compliance with the agreement and extended sanctions relief for Iran. The IAEA Director, Yukiya Amano, has also confirmed for the eight time that Iran is complying with its commitments. The next deadline is on 15 October. The International Atomic Energy Agency is UN’s nuclear watchdog.
Rouhani also said that Iran would respond accordingly to the US exiting the JCPOA: “Given that Mr Trump's actions and reactions and policies are somewhat unpredictable, we have thought long and hard about our reactions." He added that "if the US wants to increase the tensions it will see the reaction from Iran."
The co-signatories of the deal include the UK, Russia, France, China, and Germany. The deal is also supported by a UN Security Council resolution. All the co-signatories are in agreement for remaining in the deal whereby Iran undertook to limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief related to the program.
