UNHCR: Iran a model for protecting asylum seekers

(Persia Digest) – UN High Commissioner for refugees, Filippo Grandi, has said: “Iran has become a leading world model with its progressive policies for asylum seekers.”

The Commissioner who is on a 3-day visit to Tehran, emphasized: “Iran is host to one of the world’s largest refugee communities and needs more support.”

He also acknowledged Iran’s welfare policies in integrating asylum seekers into economic programs, including access to national health insurance schemes and giving work permits for a range of jobs.

Grandi has met with a number of Iranian officials during his trip, including the Foreign Minister, and reiterated the commitment of the Commission to backup Iran's efforts in providing support and solution for Afghan refugees.

Persia Digest reports that Iran has an estimated one million legal refugees, the majority of whom are from Afghanistan. The Iranian government’s estimates for illegal refugees from its neighboring country stand at 1.5 to 2 million.
