(Persia Digest) – Javad Zarif has commented on the sanctioning of the Central Bank of Iran Chief, Valiollah Seif by the US, saying: “This is yet another illegal move by the US, like all its other moves.”
The US Treasury Department announced yesterday that it has imposed new sanctions against the Chief of the Central Bank of Iran, Valiollah Seif, and the former deputy director of the Bank’s International Department, Ali Tarzali.
The US Treasury Department issued the following statement: “The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has added Valiollah Seif and Ali Tarzali on its SDN list for their link to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) Qods Force and financial support of Hizballah.”
Valiollah Seif is also subject to US secondary sanctions, meaning that compliance with the sanctions is binding on all American nationals and institutions and all citizens and institutions of foreign countries that do not want to be subjected to US sanctions.
Ali Tarazali is now retired and no longer works at the CBI.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Bahram Ghassemi, also said: “Imposing new sanctions on Iran, and placing the name of the CBI Chief on the OFAC list in particular, simultaneously with talks being conducted between FM Zarif and the EU on the JCPOA, is a clear indication that the unilateral withdrawal of the US from the deal has not yet achieved its Iranophobic targets. In the wake of its failures and the destructive effects of its own mistakes and misconceptions after its unilateral withdrawal, the US is trying to impact the will and determination of other members remaining in the JCPOA and other countries in the world.”
