Burnt City at the feet of archaeologists

“Shahr-e Sukhteh” [Burnt City] has been called “a paradise of archaeology” by the famous American scholar and archaeologist Richard Fry. Presently, fourteen Italian and German archaeologists from the University of Salento in Italy are taking part in the sixteenth season of excavations in the ruins of this ancient city in eastern Iran. They will be concentrating mainly on workshops where it is believed that turquoise and Lapis Lazuli beads were cut.

Jabbar Baghcheban is known as the father of the deaf and hard-of-hearing in Iran. He is the founder of the first school for the deaf in Iran, which he established in the city of Tabriz and called it “Baghche-ye Atfal” [The children’s garden], and thus became known as “Bagcheban” [gardener]. He passed away in 1966.
