(Persia Digest) - Achaemenid tablets will be returned to Iran after 80 years; although the exact time of this return cannot be determined, but the ruling of the US court to reject the confiscation of the Achaemenid tablets is final.
The legal director general of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran spoke of a negotiation to accelerate the transfer of the Achaemenid tablets to the country. “The verdict issued by the Supreme Court of the United States regarding the "rejection of the confiscation of the Achaemenid tablets" is certain; fortunately, this verdict indicated the Supreme Court’s positive reception”, Ebrahim Shaghaghi stated.
“After carrying out the usual paperwork, we should be able to return the tablets back home, as it has been done in the case of previous tablets and inscriptions over the past few years” he added, referring to the efforts made by the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization to contact the University of Chicago after the Supreme Court's verdict.
The general counsel of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization stated that the Legal Department is following the case to negotiate with the Center for International Legal Affairs and the International Court of Justice for the subsequent stages of the transfer of items. He also mentioned three important points in the verdict to reject the confiscation of the Achaemenid tablets in the United States.
Shaghaghi stated that the verdict to return the Achaemenid tablets was not only for this specific case. “The Supreme Court has issued this verdict which is the highest court in the United States; therefore, this ruling can set a precedence for other courts in other similar cases, even in other countries, in the coming years. It takes away the possibility of seizure and confiscation of other countries’ public properties from private and public entities”, he added.
