(Persia Digest) – Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Taro Kono, Japanese Foreign Minister, held a telephone conversation on Friday 6 April 2018, emphasizing on their commitment to the 2015 JCPOA Iran nuclear agreement and its implementation.
The European External Action Service (EEAS) issued a statement following a meeting between Mogherini and Japanese FM, discussing various issues including the JCPOA. Both parties have stressed their commitment to implementing the agreement.
Mogherini has thanked Japan for its endorsements and technical assistance to implementing the JCPOA.
Persia Digest reports that while the IAEA has confirmed that Iran is fully implementing its commitments to the JCPOA, the US President has called it the worse deal ever and asked for its amendment or US withdrawal. However, the EU is trying to continue the JCPOA implementation as an important international agreement.
German media reported on Thursday that Angela Merkel will be meeting Donald Trump in early May in Washington. President Trump will be announcing his decision on recertifying the JCPOA and suspension of sanctions against Iran on 12 May.
