(Persia Digest) – Javad Zarif initially mentioned the possibility of Iran leaving the NPT during his interview with the New Yorker on 22 April 2018, stating that if the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement, Iran would have three options to consider, one of which would be leaving the NPT. This has now been echoed by the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Shamkhani, saying that this would be the most likely option Iran will take should the US withdraw.
Shamkhani commented on Iran’s response to the actions taken by the US President regarding the JCOPA, and said: “Unfortunately, the US has been sabotaging the agreement since day one. According to the NPT, member countries can easily leave the Treaty if they decide it is not in their national interest. This also includes the IR of Iran.”
Shamkhani added: “Whether the US withdraws from the JCPOA, or implements it with procrastinations and delays, it will not be to Iran’s benefit.”
He continued: “Iran is ready to resume its nuclear program.”
The Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran stressed: “The IR of Iran will likely have significant moves on its agenda in case of a US withdrawal.”
In answer to the question of Iran’s response to the EU position of remaining in the JCPOA, Shamkhani answered: “We welcome this decision by the EU. But this does not mean we will pay ransom money to them. This would be a strategic misconception by them. Iran will not allow any country to cross its red lines.”
