(Persia Digest) – Iran’s top diplomat, Javad Zarif, has issued a statement on the occasion of the Persian Gulf National Day: “Congratulations on the occasion of the Persian Gulf National Day on 30 April to all those who have lived alongside this historic body of water and coexisted as long as time itself.”
The message continues:
“The Persian Gulf is much more than just a body of water. It is a historic reality we have known as the Persian Gulf for thousands of years. It is a priceless legacy left behind for us by our ancestors and those that live around it. It is the birthplace of lasting culture and native values which are at one with the identity and way of life in our part of the world. Against this backdrop and legacy, it has become a symbol of the history and culture of our region today.
The Persian Gulf has survived from the distant past as a lasting heritage for us and our posterity. It has been home to the most vital energy and commercial arteries of the world. The Persian Gulf must be a strong region and a secure expanse for cooperation and peace born from within. This can only be achieved through talks and confidence building. The idea of a regional dialogue forum is a practical approach based on this very fact.”
Persia Digest reports that 30 April has been named “Persian Gulf National Day” in Iran. It marks the anniversary of the expulsion of the Portuguese from the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.
