(Persia Digest) – In a speech live on television tonight, the Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, announced moments after Donald Trump pulled the US out of the JCPOA nuclear agreement that Iran will stay in the deal and make its decision in the coming weeks.
Persia Digest reports that in response to Trump’s decision and exit from the JCPOA, Hassan Rouhani said: “Iran is a country committed to its obligations, and the US is a country that has never remained committed to its obligations. The past forty years, and even before that, have clearly shown that the US has remained hostile towards the great Iranian nation and the region. I am happy that an annoying person has left the JCPOA agreement.”
He continued: “The Americans announced tonight that they have pulled out of the JCPOA. This only confirmed what they had been doing over the past few months in other ways. Regardless, the IAEA has repeatedly confirmed Iran’s compliance with the agreement.”
He added: “The JCPOA was not a bilateral agreement between Iran and the US that the US can say it is withdrawing from it. This is an international, multilateral agreement backed by an UNSCR. The US has officially announced that it is not committed to its international obligations.”
The Iranian President stated: “As of now, the JCPOA agreement is between Iran and five other countries. I have issued orders to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to conduct talks with the EU, China, and Russia over the next few weeks. We will continue the JCPOA for now without the US.”
He addressed the Iranian people: “People must not worry about the future of their country, basic commodities, and foreign currency. Trump is conducting a psychological and economic warfare against us and we will not allow him to win.”
He went on to say that he will continue dialogue with the JCPOA signatories committed to the agreement, and reiterated: “If the JCPOA is a paper that does not provide for the benefits of the Iranian people, we have a very clear road ahead of us. We are now waiting for a response from the other five powers. If all of Iran’s benefits are guaranteed under the agreement, we will remain in it. Otherwise, I will speak with the nation and inform them of our decisions.”
Rouhani ended by saying: “I have informed Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization to be ready for unlimited industrial enrichment.”
