(Persia Digest) – The UK Ambassador to Tehran has met with Gholam-Hossein Shafe’ei, Head of Iran’s Parliament for the Private Sector, at the Chamber of Commerce in Tehran. Topics on the agenda were the JCPOA, bilateral trade, banking ties between Iran and the EU, and the UK Embassy plans to support SMEs.

Gholam-Hossein Shafe’ei stated that Europe and the UK have taken a good political stance towards recent decisions by the US and its exit from the JCPOA. He reiterated: “But the stance has to show a good economic outcome. Talk is not enough. Iran must see in practice what is being said by Europe and the UK.”

UK Ambassador in Tehran, Rob Macaire, also stated that the circumstances were favorable for Iranian and UK companies to work together, and added: “An expert workgroup is working in the UK Embassy to pave the way for more economic ties between the two countries.”

He continued: “Europe is not able to fully compensate for the US withdrawal from the JCPOA. But it is worth noting that the political commitments of Europe and the UK to the JCPOA are very serious.”

Rob Macaire stressed: “Hence, the US Embassy workgroup has focused on SMEs and is seeking to establish banking channels between Iran and the UK to help promote their activities in Iran.”
