(Persia Digest) – Following the imposition of sanctions against Turkey, Iran’s top diplomat, Javad Zarif, tweeted: “Trump's jubilation in inflicting economic hardship on its NATO ally Turkey is shameful. The US has to rehabilitate its addiction to sanctions & bullying or entire world will unite—beyond verbal condemnations—to force it to. We’ve stood with neighbors before, and will again now.”
Persia Digest reports that Javad Zarif’s tweet has met with a wide reaction on Turkish media. Turkish papers “Star Gazetesi”, “Karar”, “Daily Sabah”, “Habertürk”, “Akşam”, “Hürriyet”, “Milliyet”, and “Milli Gazete”, and television channels NTV and CNN Türk, have published the tweet describing the stance of Iran's high ranking official as a sign of goodwill and determination in supporting Ankara against Washington's threats. As reported by Turkish media, Zarif’s response to Trump indicates Iran’s close cooperation and sympathy towards Turkey against US threats.
Following the announcement of Donald Trump's decision to double the imported aluminum tariffs from Turkey to the United States yesterday afternoon and new pressures on Ankara, the drop in the value of the Turkish lira is continuing.
Relations between Turkey and the US deteriorated following a request by Washington to release Andrew Brunson, an American pastor imprisoned in Turkey. The US government has also sanctioned the Turkish Minister of the Interior and Minister of Justice.
