(Persia Digest) – The 8th President of Iraq, Barham Salih, has underlined the importance of expanding ties with Iran for his country.

At a meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjedi, he pointed out the common roots and ancient ties between the two countries and expressed a wish to grow these in all fields.

Barham Salih said: “The importance of reducing tensions in the region and expanding ties with Iran has been highlighted in all telephone conversations with leaders in the area and meetings of ambassadors.”

The Iranian Ambassador in Baghdad also congratulated the election of Mr Salih to his presidential office and announced that Iran was ready to extend relations between the two countries.”

Barham Salih is the representative of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). He won a decisive victory over his rival, Fuad Hussein from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP or PDK), in the second round of voting last week by MPs with 219 votes for and 22 against.
