(Persia Digest) – The Chinese Ambassador to Islamabad has announced the participation of Iran and Afghanistan in the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Ambassador Yao Jing added: “China is interested in all of Pakistan’s neighboring countries and friends, especially Iran, to participate in CPEC.

He emphasized: “This project is not just in favor of Islamabad and Beijing, but all regional countries can benefit from it.”

Iranian Ambassador to Islamabad, Mahdi Honardoust, had stated earlier: “Tehran is inclined to join the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor with all its capabilities.”

On the sidelines of the UNGA, President Rouhani had also said Iran was interested in joining CPEC at a meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister.

Saudi Arabia had already expressed an interest in joining CPEC, but was met with a cold reaction from China and Pakistan.

The USD 48BN CPEC project is presently in its third stage of implementation. It facilitates Chinese access to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and Sea of Oman.
