(Persia Digest) – Iran’s Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to claims by the US Secretary of State about Iran's missile tests violating Security Council Resolution 2231, saying: “Iran’s missile program is a deterrent based on the country’s needs.”

Bahram Ghasemi stressed: “There are no UNSC resolutions barring Iran from its missile program or tests.”

Addressing the US Secretary of State, he added: “It is interesting, and of course risible, that you refer to a resolution which has been violated not only by your illegal unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 JCPOA nuclear accord, but also one that you encourage other UN member countries to also violate and threaten them with sanctions and punitive measures unless they do so.”

Persia Digest reports that Mike Pompeo posted the following tweet yesterday: “The Iranian regime has just test-fired a medium range ballistic missile that’s capable of carrying multiple warheads. This test violates UNSCR 2231. Iran’s missile testing & missile proliferation is growing. We condemn this act and call upon Iran to cease these activities.”
