(Persia Digest) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed reports of the arrest of an American citizen in Iran and said: “US media reports on the condition of his arrest in the city of Mashhad are lies and not true.”
Commenting on the reports about the detention of a US national in Iran, Bahram Ghasemi said: “An American citizen named Michael White has been arrested in the city of Mashhad some time ago. His arrest was reported to the US administration at the time through its interest office in Tehran and the US government was informed of the detention from the very beginning.”
Commenting on certain reports saying the detainee was kept in inappropriate conditions and was tortured, Ghasemi said: “Such reports are lies and not true and we strongly condemn them.”
“His case is being reviewed by legal bodies and the necessary information to this end will be released by related officials in due course after completion of the procedure,” said the spokesperson.
According to Persia Digest (PD), Michael White, 46, is a veteran US soldier who was arrested on a visit to Iran to see his girlfriend. According to his mother, he had previously made several visits to Iran for the same reason.
