(Persia Digest) – The Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran has announced that Iran’s railways will connect to Afghanistan via Khaf-Herat.

Kheirollah Khademi said: “Khaf railways in Razavi Khorasan, northeastern Iran, is being extended to Herat in Afghanistan. It will be 207kms long and works are progressing according to plans.”

He pointed that 76kms of the line is inside Iran, saying: “Iran has also committed to the completion of 62kms inside Afghanistan. The foundations have been laid and 60kms of the line have been completed.”

Khademi added: “Another 69kms will be constructed by the Afghan government.”

He said the railway line will facilitate transit to Iran’s neighboring countries and increase the capacity for passenger and cargo transport to secure target markets.
