(Persia Digest) – Fifteen conservative Iranian MPs have presented a question to Parliament on the controversial resignation of Foreign Minister Javad Zarif simultaneously with a visit by the Syrian President to Iran.
Persia Digest (PD) reported that the Iranian President turned down Zarif’s resignation yesterday and expressed his full support for him; but, today, a group of conservative MPs have demanded a response from Zarif for his ‘inappropriate’ scheduling to tender his resignation.
In their letter addressed to the Foreign Minister, they have written: “Minimal attention
to ational interests required that the achievements associated with the visit of Bashar al-Assad with the Supreme Leader and the President not be subject to marginalization due to your resignation.”
The fifteen MPs added: “Unfortunately, you exposed your disagreements with the President with your imprudence and strange behavior at the worst possible time and drove this great achievement to the sidelines.”
They continued: “Paying attention to the achievements and victory of the Resistance Front could have entailed positive security and defense measures, economic prosperity, and the collapse of sanctions. As the head of the country’s diplomacy machine, not only did Your Excellency not use this opportunity, but you inflicted heavy blows on our national interests.”
FM Zarif must now attend the Foreign Policy Commission of Parliament in the coming days and if the MPs are not satisfied with his response, this will be referred to the plenary session for further investigation.
