(Persia Digest) – The decision by the Trump Administration to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization has met with a variety of international responses up until Wednesday, as follows.
Moments after the US made the announcement, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Trump for his action. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain also supported the US move against the IRGC. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in the US also issued a statement thanking the President for his move against the IRGC.
But, the French Foreign Ministry stated that Paris will remain committed to the 2015 JCPOA nuclear deal, adding: “We ask everyone to refrain from increased tensions destabilizing the region.”
A Spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office also answered the question by an IRNA reporter on the US Secretary of State’s request from Washington’s allies to join the US in this decision by saying: “The US decision to designate the IRGC a terrorist organization is that country’s decision.”
At the same time, an EU Spokesperson also answered IRNA by refraining from making comments on the illegal request by the US Secretary of State and said the EU makes no remarks on such US decisions.
The Spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry also said countries, especially big powers, must refrain from bullying smaller countries and respect international law.
Chairman of the State Duma has said that Russian authorities and MPs are strongly opposed to the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization.
The Iraqi PM warned that the US action against the IRGC will have negative consequences for his country and the region.
Turkish FM, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, also criticized the US move and said: “This will destabilize the region.” He reiterated: “The decision to designate a country’s army as “terrorists” is beyond “incomprehension”.
The FM of Qatar also rejected the WH decision and said: “If we are opposed to certain actions by Iran or any other country’s army, sanctions are not the solution.”
The Japanese FM also said his country will not follow suit in Washington’s designation of the IRGC as a terrorist group; but stopping Iran’s missile program was required for regional stability.
Syria, the Houthis, and Hamas also condemned the US decision.
