(Persia Digest) – Former footballer and coach of the German National Football Team, Jürgen Klinsmann, may be on the verge of becoming Team Melli’s next head coach.
An unofficial source in Iran published a story on Instagram yesterday giving the news of the Iranian Football Federation having reached an agreement with Klinsmann.
Former Esteghlal of Khuzestan Football Club (an Iran Premier League team) Manager and advisor to Stoke City Football Club in Staffordshire, Amir Soltani, added the news to his story. He is well connected to international figures.
A day after Team Melli’s elimination from the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, Klinsmann was one of three coaches alongside Zidane and Mourinho shortlisted by the Director of Public Relations at the Ministry of Sports and Youth of Iran, Maziar Nazemi, waiting to be interviewed by the Iranian Football Federation. The shortlist, however, was not taken seriously by Iranians and football fans at the time.
It is interesting to know that Iranians also have a memory from Klinsmann not related to football. During the 1990 World Cup, a deadly earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale shook Roudbar in northern Iran, taking many lives and causing great damage. Shortly after the quake, Klinsmann expressed sympathy for the people of Roudbar and Manjil and proceeded to help them. In return, the Iranian Football Federation presented him with a tableau rug as a thank you gesture at the 1998 World Cup in France, just before the match between Iran and Germany.
Although, he lost in popularity in Iran when he ran into Iran’s goal after scoring in the same games and shook the net with his hands, seriously upsetting many Iranian fans.
Now, it remains to be seen whether Klinsmann will be coming to Iran to win the respect and affection of its people with his performance or whether life has a different fate in store.
