(Persia Digest) – The Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry has underlined that the proposal of prisoner exchange with the US is “serious” and has “precedent”.
Persia Digest (PD) reports that the Iranian Foreign Minister proposed at the Asia Society meeting in New York on Wednesday that the US and Iran exchange their respective citizens being held in both countries. He highlighted that he had made the proposal to the US Administration six months ago, but has not yet received an answer.
In answer to Zarif’s statement, a State Department Spokesperson said: “Iran must be the first to free all US citizens unilaterally.”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Seyed Abbas Mousavi, said that the US insistence to Zarif for the unilateral freedom of US prisoners is a sign of Washington’s incomprehension of negotiations, exchanges, and agreements.
He continued: “The Iranian Foreign Ministry is prepared, within the framework of its duties, to exchange all individuals convicted by the judiciary with specific charges and imprisoned in Iran with all Iranians imprisoned in the US under the illegal allegations of violations of sanctions and a permanent stay of prosecution for individuals who have been arrested under pressures applied by the US in various countries under the false allegations of violating the unlawful unilateral sanctions imposed by the US.”
The Spokesperson stressed: “If there is any will in the US to negotiate, the proposal of the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran is clear and does not require any interpretations.”
