(Persia Digest) – The Deputy Minister of Iran’s Agricultural Jihad has said: “Iran is the world’s third producer of honey in the world with an annual production of 90 thousand tons per year.”
Speaking on World Bee Day, Monday, Morteza Rezaei added: “The business is worth three thousand billion tomans (over USD 200MM) which show its feasibility.”
He continued: “According to the latest count last year, 8 million and 434 beehives existed in 85 thousand and 336 apiaries, employing 138 thousand people.”
He reiterated: “These produce 1460 tons of beeswax, 122 tons of pollen, and 3400 tons of royal jelly per year. The crude price for a kilo of royal jelly is USD 355 which makes it more valuable than saffron.”
He added: “1759 tons of honey is exported every year, indicating the least dependence and the highest added value in this industry.”
He went on to say: “At present, the per capita production of honey is 1110 grams while the per capita consumption in Iran is 1079 grams annually.”
Persia Digest (PD) reports that World Bee Day was celebrated for the second time in Tehran today by the Ambassador of Slovenia, Ms Kristina Radi. It was celebrated here because the industry is 150 years old in this country where many families are beekeepers.
