(Persia Digest) – Iranian women have been allowed into the Azadi Stadium Complex basketball court to watch the National Basketball Team in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian qualifiers. Women have been challenging authorities to be allowed into sports stadiums as spectators for years now.
In previous years, women had been allowed into a limited number of games and no changes were made in this respect despite their increasing demands, especially for football matches. Nevertheless, the Basketball Federation announced recently that all women can attend the Iran-Iraq game at the Azadi Stadium Complex.
Iran won the game 83-53.
The Ministry of Sports sources have said that they are seeking to make the women’s presence in stadiums a natural process.
Women were allowed to watch the Iran-Bahrain FIFA World Cup 2006 for the first time after the revolution towards the end of former President Mohammad Khatami’s term in office. In 2016, the doors of stadiums opened up on women in the city of Qom, 125kms southwest of Tehran. This was welcomed by women's rights activists who called it a stepping stone for women to be allowed into sporting stadiums. But, later, a number of girls were forced to disguise themselves as boys to be able to watch their favorite games.
