(Persia Digest) - The rocky village of Kandovan is located 60 kilometers southwest of Tabriz city. In fact, Kandovan is a village in Sahand Rural District, in the Central District of Osku County.
Kandovan is one of three rocky villages in the world and one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in East Azerbaijan Province. It is renowned for its houses which are carved in the form of beehives in rocky cliffs. Kandovan Village has been created by the volcanic eruptions of Mount Sahand and other volcanic mountains of the region for thousands of years in an area with one of the most pleasant climates in the province. The molten materials and lava from volcanic mountains have erupted and accumulated over the years. The naming of Kandovan Village is due to the houses located in the local rocky mountains and their indigenous, rock-cut architectural style of construction. In rock-cut architecture, building materials such as gypsum, lime, clay, etc, are not used and the space is created by carving into the stone. In fact, this architectural style is an example of human struggle with nature to take over natural rocks. Due to its architecture and style, the village has been registered on the National Heritage List.
The history of residence in this village goes back to the seventh century AH. At that time, people in the village of Hilevar, who lived 2 km west of Kandovan, decided to take refuge from the Moghuls. So they moved to the nearby plain i.e. Kandan. They slowly began to carve the village with their hands so that they could build a shelter for themselves inside it. That is how residence started in this village. When visiting Kandovan village and seeing the cone-shaped rocks, the first picture that comes to mind is the similarity of these rocks to beehives; this is while honey is one of the most important souvenirs of Kandovan. Dried fruit and nuts are also another souvenir of Azerbaijan; due to the pleasant climate of most of the province, products are offered in excellent quality. If you travel to Kandovan in the summer, you can enjoy fruits such as apricots, cherries and much other.
