(Persia Digest) - Possible Mogherini replacement for the post of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy has said that Iran’s new decision does not abrogate the JCPOA.
Spanish Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell Fontelles, has been considered as a suitable candidate to replace Mogherini. In an interview with Cadena SER radio on the JCPOA nuclear deal or the possibility of a military confrontation between the US and Iran, he said: “We believe we will not be faced with such a situation; things will not get worse and rationality will eventually prevail.”
He continued: “We in Europe will do all we can to salvage the 2015 JCPOA nuclear deal and Iran has also complied with the accord thus far.”
In response to the interviewer insisting that “Iran has not abrogated the JCPOA, but is enriching uranium above the permitted level,” Borrell said: “These are technicalities and I do not believe Iran will proceed further.”
When pushed by the interviewer about the abrogation of the deal by Trump, Borrell stressed: “Trump’s decision did not only abrogate the deal, he withdrew from it altogether.”
