(Persia Digest) – The Spokesperson for the Iranian Judiciary has announced that a death sentence has been issued for former Tehran mayor, Mohammad-Ali Najafi, by a Court of First Instance.
According to Gholam-Hossein Esmaeili, Najafi was indicted with the charges of inflicting injury, homicide, and illegal possession of a weapon. He was acquitted of the injury charge, sentenced to two years in prison for illegal possession of a weapon, and accused of murder.
Persia Digest (PD) reported that former Tehran Mayor and Minister of Education in Iran killed his second wife by firing a gun a few weeks ago. A few hours after the murder, he gave himself in to the police. Three hearings were held with the presence of the victim’s family and lawyers prior to sentencing.
By law, Najafi has the right to appeal. If convicted by the Court of Appeal, he will be hanged for murder.
