(Persia Digest) – Phase I of Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar was inaugurated by the Iranian President and 60 foreign guests from 17 countries. The opening of Phase I has increased Chabahar’s capacity as a port by 8.5 million tons. This figure will go up to 80 million tons in the last stage.

The Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar is of strategic importance for the countries of Central Asia, India, Afghanistan, and also a number of European countries; this port is very strategically placed and is one of the best routes for transshipment, transit, and imports-exports.

At the opening ceremony of Phase I, President Hassan Rouhani said: “The Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar can be a South-North shortcut route connecting to the ocean.”

The President of Iran stated that goods will be delivered to our neighboring countries faster and cheaper. It will also connect places such as Afghanistan and the northern countries of Central Asia to the South and the ocean.

The Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran, Abbas Akhundi, also said that this port will be a means of establishing peace and security in the region, and added: “All countries worldwide will have access to this port in Chabahar.”

Phase I of Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar which was inaugurated by the Iranian President today includes a jetty and outer dyke. With a dredging of 15.8 million cubic meters, the construction of two 720 m container piers, three multipurpose terminals measuring 684 m for 50/100-ton capacity vessels, container and multipurpose terminals measuring 64 hectares, 16 container and yard cranes, and reviving an estimated 203 hectares have been planned for the port.

Chabahar Port is at a distance of 575 nautical miles from Kandla Port in India, 6620 nautical miles from Hamburg in Germany, 5970 nautical miles from Rotterdam in Holland, 5470 nautical miles from Bilbao in Spain, and 4135 nautical miles from Genoa in Italy major port cities of Europe. It can play a vital role in moving goods between Southeast Asian countries and Europe.
