(Persia Digest) – Iran is proceeding with the dossier of its Martian Mountains in Chabahar, southeastern Iran, to be listed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).
Alireza Jalalzai, Director-General of the Cultural Heritage Organization of Sistan and Baluchestan Province, said: “Given the importance of tourism development in Chabahar and Konarak and after the national registration of the unique Martian Mountains located in our country, we intend to prepare another dossier to inscribe them as a World Heritage site.”
According to him, similar mountains are also located in the US which are not as old as Iran's Martian Mountains.
The pristine Martian Mountains of Chabahar, also known as Miniature Mountains, are located between the Beris Strait and Gwadar Bay. Because of their particular sedimentation and erosion, these mountains have forms similar to the rugged surface of Mars. Calcareous sediments of the remains of marine organisms (crustaceans and fish), along with sand and clay, are the main constituents of these mountains.
